Why offer special events for Dads?
Positive father involvement in children’s learning is associated with better exam results, better school attendance, less criminality, better quality interpersonal relationships and good mental health, says the Department for Children, Schools and Families.
Schools also realise there is a need to be more ‘man friendly’ and encourage a partnership between schools and fathers. Dads often work longer, more unsociable hours which are less flexible and this can prevent them from participating in school activities.
In recognition of this, and in response to government guidance encouraging schools to draw dads in, schools have been looking for new ways to involve them in children’s learning.
Locally, Parent Support Adviser, Helen Burns has been asked by Red Rose and Bullion Lane Primary schools to organise a series of events, specifically for male carers and children.
Who is a Dad?
When talking about Dads, we mean all male carers – this could be a step dad, grandad, uncle or Mum’s partner. Anyone who is over 18 and acts as a male role model.
